Im jealous. My poor old 2 l Aircooled t25 hasnt been driven for 18months and wheras I used to be able to get her up to about 65 now shes only doing 55. Mind you when I first put her on the road again 2 weeks ago she was only doing 45 so hopefully Ive opened her up a bit taking her down to Cornwall for the weekend and she wil get better again.

Hills well thats a different story she starts up ok then Im changing down gears to get her up to the top. Talk about embarrassing. definately Myrtle the turtle. :(

That looks an incredibly wide road for a 30 limit Boxy if that's what it was?

I find it amazing that our double parked narrow dangerous Victorian residential street has the same limit as that. ..
Think this country has still got a lot of basics totally wrong.. one is that falsely low limits and revenue cameras actually improve driving and safety.

My 1.6d does 60-65 happily too, although I try to keep it in the 55-60mph zone. fastest I've been is 66mph. It does slow down up long hills though but not much if I keep it in the 55-60mph zone. Any slower it loses momemtum too easy.

V's 1.9 petrol, will happily do 75 but we tend to keep it in the 60-65mph range, that way you can't see the petrol gauge movingn and she may last a little longer.

I think the important thing about 1.6d engines is that some of them will be more tired than others - the one that came in mine was in pretty bad shape so was likely down a fair few bhp from new, so something that is just powerful enough became not powerful enough and I didn't feel safe driving it.

A guy down the road from me has recently had a recon 1.6d fitted in his westfalia and sais that he keeps it at 70mph (on the speedo) no problem.

my 1.9d 1Y, on 4 speed diesel box and standard tyres will do 70 reasonably "happily", but I generally cruise at 55-60, as i'm scared of blowing it up.

What kind of speeds are people getting from Subaru/porsche conversions. It would be nice to be able to overtake people on the motorway or am i dreaming.

Whats with this obsession for speed?...it's a campervan!
I put a 2.1i DJ in mine to stop the cog finding on a hill, it now does the job adequately.

as for a porche engine, have you succumbed to that myth?
...It takes an extraordinary amount of money to fit one.

The subaru EJ22 is a much easier and cheaper option...if you must have non VW power.
personally a subaruined camper is just as likely to let you down, these are old engines now.

I quite agree - one of the best things about my van is that when I get in, I've got no choice but to relax - it's not going any faster whatever I do!

Yup, agree. I would say that on the whole, I'm a more relaxed and patient driver now. I'm sure that part of the modern development of road rage, is partially due to faster and more powerful cars. Plus the inevitable hike in insurance. At 55mph, you get there when you get there.

Having said that, the prospect of a two day journey to the south of France/Scotland etc is a dark cloud ...

Unless I'm running late for something.

I drive a lot of miles .. 20 - 25k a year for the last 24 years, many of it on motorways... I find it safer/more relaxing to be in the 3rd overtaking lane , away from all those Foreign lorry drivers cat napping in the left lane, my van has always run nicely at 80 ish ( sat nav reading ) just tickling the accelerator, if I drop down to 60 then it takes a prolonged time at full throttle to build momentum again.

I drove a friends Westy back from Wales for her when she bought it, as I didnt know the van, brakes , bushes, engine etc I took it very gingerly back to Kent... it was the most stressful drive ever ! all that trying to pull out to overtake, being lhd it was made even harder .

As it happens it was the best van I have ever driven... wish I owned it now .( I bet the guy we bought it from wishes he had kept it too ?? eh Jason ? 8) )

'Pionte' my point exactly! Motorways are allot less stressful in the fast lane, away from lorries and people who for some unknown reason find it impossible to stay at a constant speed. Repeatedly accelerating then breaking is very frustrating.

yep.. honestly, once going it sits really nicely at that speed . I can feel when it wants to go and when it doesnt, I dont have to sit with the pedal on the floor, obviously any incline and the speed will drop but I was really surprised how comfortable it felt. Hi rpm has always been better than low rpm, maybe now I have sorted the carb out it will sit nicer at 60 ...

I am lucky that its the original engine ( as far as I can tell ) and only 93k miles.

That was with the original 14 inch 185 wheels and tyres on... Ive not done any motorway driving since fitting the new alloys 16 inch with 215 tyres so rolling resistance may have increased .
