will do tomorrow. looks totally different to all the other ones i have looked at. think this guy probably knows something we dont. he even handed me back the rubber blank for the right hand carb. it runs absolutely perfectly now though. ultra steady idle, pulls great in every gear and using considerably less fuel. took it into southampton in rush hour friday and was a pleasure to drive. i never would have done it before.

Thats great you got it sorted. My van was having the exact same problems but i've got the engine running smoooothe now thanks to this link http://www.ratwell.com/technical/DualCarbs.html. I had to replace the idle bypass cut off valve and rearrange the vacuum hoses. Just trying to get the chokes sorted now as its a little rough starting. Should the butterfly flap be completely closed when the choke is on which in turn catches on the fast idle cam and opens throttle slightly, or should it be slightly open to let air through?

billybigspud wrote:had a look at what sgs has done to my engine and the vacuum hoses are plumbed in totally different to how they were. the two that come from the dizzy go to each carb but i thought one was meant to be blanked off. one goes from air box to maf (looks like a maf anyway ) and the other disappears over the back. the van has never run as good in fact it runs brilliantly. i was thinking is this a mod that other ppl have done or heard of before? i have no reason to question scott as what he knows about Aircooled engines isnt worth knowing. the guy runs a 600bhp type 4 dragster.

Yes as photo would help.

I've just managed to get my engine timing just right after palying with the idle speed screw - ite was running at 1050 rpm's - down to 855rpm's and holding steady with the elec idle plugs together, then moved the dizzy to 8* ATDC and it runs like a dream! At last it has some guts going up hill and even had her up to 74mph with a little bit to go on a straight road. Wow.!

Just took her off for a 300 mile round trip and still have some fuel left in the tank...so i'm waiting to check the consumption. My guess is about 21mpg but then we were fully loaded and towing a trailer with 2 tandems!

i'll let you guys know.

Just goes to show that getting timing right is cruical to good running and fair econmu on these engines
