I have two different distributor caps, the first was the wrong one. I now have the right cap fitted. Seen as I am running out of options how would I go about checking to see if the coil is working ok? :?

there are resistances that can be checked, but in a intermittent fault, this would be diffecult, even if you had the data needed to compare........
substitution would be the practical way, but you mustn't be changing anything else at all at the time of substitution, or you introduce variables.

you may also want to change the ignition unit ( on the nr side engine bay wall nr the black box containing the elastic-trickery) as this is commonly beleived to either work or not, but i found out mine worked , but not fully!
Again susbstitution is the only way...... but not at the same time as the coil

Doesn't sound intermittent to me, from what you say, its when its having to pull, thats when a load is being put on it... that's not intermittent.

... get it connected up to an ignition diagnostics machine and you'll know in minutes if any of the plug, leads, dizzy or coil are iffy!

there is abrown "earth" wire running out of the loom from the ignition module to the left cyl head, where it is bolted to the head can corrode and give an odd missfire/poor running symptom.. I have seen this twice.. Odd but disconnect and quick clean with a wire brush seemed to cure the sysmptoms..
Also recently I saw a rotor arm breaking down and causing running problems, then it would just stop...

After a series of elimination I've found that the problem was down to a "new" rotor arm. I put the old rotor arm back on and Scoobie drove lovely. I nearly ran out of petrol on the way back though, doh! Thanks everyone for your help ,it is much appreciated. Now I've got to sort out the fuel sender, petrol consumption, change the water pump and the heater valve. Should keep me busy for an hour or two. I wish I didn't have to go to work tonight. :D
