Just popped in to say "don't try to test the starter motor whilst it is off the van"
Reason = the shaft is only supported at one end, the other end is only supported when fitted, by the bush in the bellhousing. Testing it off the van will cause the entire rotating bit to thrash around in the casing, often damaging it seriously.

You may need to pop the end off the starter to see whats going on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNKSeAAd3rk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
As John says, under no circumstances run it off the vehicle but by all means pull it off and check connections are sound internally and brushes have some length left. In my experience it tends to be duff brushes, broken braided cable or new solenoid needed although sometimes its impossible to remove solenoid screws without drilling them out and fitting new ones. Even if all three potential issues are problematic, fixing it is STILL cheaper than an exchange one although if you find a refurb place that doesn't charge the earth, it may not be much more for them to sort it for you.
I've yet to come across one with a ruined bearing although testing it off the vehicle would do that for sure.
Bloomin hot out there. Have been bending and running new copper pipes to my propex, cooker and cool box this morning. Like a furnace in there! All part of my new 'beach theme' interior.
