Water Pipe Availability
My metal front to rear water pipes are pretty comprehensively rotten. Any idea where i can get replacements?
The ETKA software shows 2 parts. 1 is available from the dealer at around 85quid and the other is now obsolete.
GSF only show 1 type of pipe. Are the 2 metal pipes the same by any chance?

I buy all mine from VW, for the earlier metal ones swap for later plastic type.
The plastic ones are of a larger bore than the metal so if you can pick up some rad hoses that will help out then you will have to just squeeze the rear ends on.
£62.12 plus VAT the front to rears are from VW.
Remember that petrol and Diesel ones are different with he Diesel ones being longer, although the earlier petrol ones are similar to Diesel ones in the fact that they enter the engine bay.

I too had the same problem as yourself(had a go it about it in the tech section several months back)My waterpipes were shot from the middle to the back, the front sections were in really good nick surprisingly. Anyway the upshot to it all is that I ended up going to JK for the upgrade plastic pipes for my '85 DG.
The real pisser is they are PICKUP ONLY so that was a real "idiot" of a trip from yorkshire down to JK to collect them and to add insult they're nearly £140.
Next problem is they are a larger diameter than the metal originals, the METAL are 32mm and the PLASTIC are 38mm.
It is possible to get the plastic into the original hose but it's not easy.Rather than struggle with that I bought some reducers on ebay, 38mm down to 32mm and used some of the good pipe out of the metal pipes to use between the reducers and the hoses and a load of jubilee clips. Not a pretty sight but it does work and I'm now back on the road.
On top of that you'll need to cut the cross member where the original pipes go through( Info I got of the 80-90 reckoning the pipes would go thru the same hole by rearranging the pipe layout but it's so tight and I didn't want the plastic pipes rubbing on the chassis, Couldn't even get anything in to shim between them).
If you have access to a lift ramp then take it cos doing it on a set of stands is not recommended. I had to drop the tank cos the bigger pipes were getting stuck when feeding them thru' the hole, hence the need to do the job on a lift, so much easier.
BusDepot.com have the pipes which aren't cheap (they're on offer at the moment)but at least they're stainless & the right size so the extra layout could be worthwhile.
If I were going to do it all again I would either go for these stainless at BusDepot.com or I would try and salvage as much of the original pipes as I could( in the end I had about 5 feet of good pipes)and try and get some rad hose from halfords or a scrappers and make up the shortage which for me in the end was around 4 feet which isn't alot.I reckon you could link something up, not too pretty but you get back on the road for less money. If only the original owners had slapped on some hammerite or the like alll those years ago we wouldn't be having this discussion.......

water pipes
Wouldn't it be great if we had some kind of OE new stock register on the 80-90 that people could tap their bits and pieces into and list?, probably save a fortune and alot of heartache for many owners.I know we have the for sale section but it would be great if it were more structured in a parts department kind of set up.......£50 for a new set....bargain if ever there was one!....nice one lhd.
rad hose cut to length
You used to be able to buy the rad hose in rolls I'm told by those who know back in the good old days.........sods law someone has a set lying around after the jobs done !........
