Cab window knocking when fully wound down ?

Post by aimlessrock »

Hi folks.

The drivers window when wound all the way down rocks from side to side slightly and is banging against the raised metal bracket in the door( see the picture)

Is this a bodge that I have found? - the rail should surely go past this bracket?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bit hard to understand based on pic and what you say.

Have you looked at the other side to see if it's the same set up.

Mines exactly the same. Looks like a rubber guide is missing. Just stripped mine down about an hour ago

When I accelerate or brake with the window fully down the window rocks backwards and forwards knocking against that plate. Very annoying which is why I strpped down today to see what's going on.

I had the same I believe there should be some sort of padding there IV looked at the parts diagram but doesn't show anything I can see, so I stuck some 1" square felt pads there and just stacked them to take the slack if I get. A chance in this weather bill take a pic

Don’t know if this helps solve your problem but came across these foam pads when working on my previous van?
Inside the door cavity, VW placed a self-adhesive dense foam pad/buffer to gently sandwich the glass and stop it from vibrating in the wind or when closing the door. Over decades, this foam rots away into sticky powder, leaving the glass completely unsecured when retracted.

From what I can see there is no part number on them but hopefully the measurements on the drawing would enable you to replicate one.

Most likely the plastic guides on the winding mechanism broke off.
You can buy them aftermarket, or 3D print them.

I fixed mine today by using some nylon 66 sheet I had. A 30mm strip  40mm long with 2 holes drilled through and self tapped to the metal bracket. I had to grind a couple of mm off taking account the curve of the glass to guide the window.

There must be two versions of that foam block, because I have a loose one to go back in a door and its a slightly different shape, distinctly trapezoidal and handed, made from a quite firm synthetic foam.
Are there front and rear glass guide blocks?

The foam block is below the metal bracket the OP photos show which is what the window glass is banging on and there is only a 3 or 4mm gap. I didn't think it was a sufficient gap for a foam block, hence my use of nylon
