Update after fitting new vacuum advance unit from BW for under £8.
With some embarrassment but a lot of relief, this tiny expenditure and half hour of work has fixed my issue and van is now starting and running perfectly.
It wasn’t the automatic choke, and the ambient temperature has a much bigger effect on the butterfly opening angle during startup I wasn’t aware of.
And I was about to give up and send my carb away for checking and repair.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on checking for vacuum leaks. I honestly thought it was ok because the engine speed changed when I pulled the hose off the unit. Dumb ass.
