1.9DG - No Spark

Post by VWKat »

Hello, returning again - still got my Van, 20+ years - still love it, I'm giving it an overhaul and also a repaint currently, windscreen also needs to come out and some welding is being done by myself. lol got a new welding machine which is going OK - still can't do seamwelds, just spot welds though.  Anyway, I Did my welding to the rear corner tray by the air filter inlet and want to now turn the van around to get working on the front end - I have also installed a new stainless exhaust but can't hear how it sounds because I'm having trouble starting it :( - no spark whatsoever - I have bought a new coil and Ignition control unit - I have tested the wiring on the hall sensor, maybe I need a new distributor but engine was working fine before I took it off the road and started working on it last year- have done full brake changes and rear wheel bearings as well.  Seems like I'm just going to have to check every component of the electrics one by one to see what this problem is.  Wiring does look a bit old and needs replacing in the engine area to be honest.  Fuses up front all seem ok - was thinking of replacing fuse box with more modern fuses - has anyone done this? is it worth it?  Anyway- any help/comments would be helpful to me as struggling right now lol  Have a nice day   :)

I didn't know this until very recently, in my case the Hall trigger had died suddenly along with some other faults occurring simultaneously.

PS it sounds like your welding activities may well be a contributing factor. Electronics really don't like that stuff going on close by. Was the battery still connected? Does your choice of sound system still work? (I had a nice one killed by a welder)

Update - I bought a new distributor and that solved the problem - most likely the hall sensor was bad, it was old and needing changing anyway.  I am almost ready for MOT - however, have an issue with the dash lights - the oil and battery light have gone, after I have done some wiring to the LED clock illuminators - so I guess I have wrecked a part of the old circuit ribbon, which I now see can be replaced by hard wires, campervan culture do a kit but it's expensive, I see someone on here has rewired the dash themselves, looks like it's possible, the only thing I don't like the look of is the circuit board with diodes.
