Changed the voltage regulator but where does this go!?

Post by Samanthington »

Hi all

So I’ve been having electrical problems for a while on the van. I just put it down to being a cheapskate and only buying 2nd hand batteries from a guy in Biggin Hill!!

Turns out the batteries aren’t charging when the van runs. I’m getting no increase in voltage at the battery when running, so I’m trying everything before forking out for a new alternator. Including a new voltage regulator and hard wire dash kit (blue pcb at the multipin connector was a gonna).

Took the voltage regulator off and thought I’d found the culprit…2 very short and rounded brushes.

But, when I unscrewed the old one it sprung off and something fell out…looks like a little piece of bent brass - obvs what made it ping off - but I can’t figure out where it needs to go back! Not even sure what to call it to look it up.

Have been reading and reading and came across this post: viewtopic.php?t=65019

This brass forky thing sounds like the same thing…does anyone have any images of where I need to put it back? It needs a good clean but then where does it go?!

An alternator is way cheaper than replacing the dash pcb:o

A picture would be handy to see what you’re talking about

You don’t say! I have pictures to post but it wont let me. Have tried from both the photo library and exporting to a jpg from files. Green banner saying ‘images uploading’ then nothing.

Wish I hadn’t said anything about the dash kit

Search over. Found a video on rebuilding the alternator, can now see where it’s supposed to be attached…time to get soldering.

If I ever figure out how to get pics on here I’ll post what I can! 8)

Nice!

It’s the contact that should be fixed to the alternator. If we have some high temp solder I might try and take it out tonight to try and reattach it.

Is that a crazy idea?

Personally, I would stick an ad in the wanted section. Or buy a new alternator if you intend on keeping your van. I'm not sure soldering it back would hold for long.

Definitely won’t be a permanent fix, but it might give us the weekend 🤞🤞🤞
