Another fast flashing indicator question

Post by adsnape »

My right indicator is behaving like a bulb is burned out, with rear and internal warning light going double speed, and the right headlight is flashing dimly instead of the indicator. The front indicator assembly andbulb is good, lights up on a battery. I have voltage at the indicator and the earth at the indicator reads continuous to the chassis. All my earth crowns are clean. Does anyone know where the earth breach may be? Im guessing it is do do with the parking light facility but i dont know where to start. Headlights work properly on dipped and full beam.
Fyi i have had the indicators out while welding and painting the van but the headlights stayed in. Havent tried the hazards though, just thought of that test now and the van is 5 miles away so ill check that tomorrow.
Thanks

Earth are all on the left pillar inside the van

A continuity test will show good at quite a high resistance, but the wire will struggle to carry much current and show a large voltage drop. Try to meter the voltage from the ground side of the bulb holder to a good ground when the indicator is active. It should read virtually 0 volts, I suspect you will see several volts, maybe even 12 ish.

Im lucky when I get 12v out of the battery :-(

So if I am seeing a high voltage, that indicates a faulty wire/poor connection to ground?

I was worried that was the case, Ive taken them all off and cleaned there so I hope that isnt the issue. Tried earthing direct from the earth terminal of the indicator and that didnt cure it. Unless the fault is at the headlight...

a number of the earth wires are twinned, if the connection between the wires and the terminal is corroded then the earth will take path of least resistance and may flow back along the other wire that is crimped in the terminal if it can, so whist you may have got contact between crown and terminal you may not have good contact between the wire core and terminal, the green corrosion can extend a few inches into the wire sometimes - this applies to single wires as well as twinned ones.
Leaking windscreen seals often mean water ingress and the water flow path is from the corner of windscreen down the A pillar where the crowns are mounted, it is not always easy to see if this happening in the darkness under the dash but is often evident with the dash out, the tidemarks are visible; also the screw that holds the crown to the body is the earth and if very corroded may mean poor path to earth
