Behind Pulley Coolant Pipe issue

Post by maxstu »

How close is close? Tightest gap using a feeler gauge is 0.28mm. And that is without gasket. Should l put a dink in the pipe for peace of mind?

I wouldn't get rid of the gasket, just give the pipe a little tap.. or two.. helped a chat with an engine install and when I fitted his new pipes there the pulley touched the pipe but only found that out after it ran and wondered what the horrible din was. It was only touching a fraction of a mm so after 2 mins it self clearanced. :rofl

Tip: because your engine has a Type 1 oil pump which protrudes more than the original, when the coolant transfer pipe is bolted to the pump it can touch the studs/nuts and kick away from the case, closing the pulley clearance.
Its advisable to check the alignment with the elbow near #2 cylinder. Bolt the pipe on with a gasket, put a sturdy bit of close fitting tube/deep socket on a 1/2" extension INSIDE the pipe end and tweak the pipe as required before the final bolt up (with sealant)

Obviously make sure its not binding hard otherwise you'll probably do serious damage, give the pipe a tweek then try again.. If it isn't touching all the way around then you're probably OK, is the flywheel all shimmed up and on?

PS in your photo it looks like the pipe is already touching the oil gallery boss, IME the clearance areas on the pipes are always in the wrong place, its stainless so pretty soft and easily adjusted.

Will the Type 1 oil pump affect engine bearer or the bracket to crankcase?
