Wouldn't start - Happy ending, some lessons learnt!

Post by Piratepete »

Hi Guys. Had a good summer in Cybil with no problems at all (apart from wife locking us out once :D ). Always instant start.
Home on 26th Oct. Two weeks later wouldn't start. Engine turned over ok and attempted to fire up, then did and revved  ok, then died as soon as I went to idle. Wouldn't fire up again.
So scratched my head, smelt petrol, so wondered electrics. Looked inside the distributor, thought the rotor arm looked manky and the cap pin spring was not very strong.  So I installed my spare cap and rotor arm - which resulted in an instant start up. Much relief!
Well, I'm guessing that the damp weather affected the already worn out cap and rotor.
1. Something to look at if yours won't start after being fine.
2. Carry spares. I gave myself lots of brownie points :)
3. Do get the distributor included in your annual service! I don't know if mine was looked at, but the rotor arm was overdue for replacement.
Cheers! Pete
