proper T25 1.6 TD engine oil Northern Ireland

Post by larrymo »

hi guys, this is my first time posting i am trying to restore a 1986 LHD tin top T25 with a 1.6 TD engine and was looking advice on the best engine oil and where to source it in Northern Ireland. i was assuming it is 15W40 but people seem to disagree between mineral, semi synthetic and synthetic. Also 3 of the suppliers i have visited in Belfast and Armagh dont sell 15w40 except in Mineral.
also when i was removing the blue oil switch in the oil filter housing it was loose and it seems some of the threads were stripped so i was considering having a go at installing a helicoil, has anyone tried this before or does any body have a better solution. Thanks

Any 15W40 oil with VW 505.00 specification is fine for these old diesels. 15W40 is usually mineral based. 10w40 is where semi synthetic starts.

Helicoil will leak. You need a spark plug thread repair kit in M10x1 that is more likely to seal.
Or you might be fine with switches with 1/8 - 27 NPT thread - probably some PO used those to kill the thread. But better to find a good used oil filter housing

Many synthetic oils will have some hydrocarbon mineral oil components in them along with man made synthetic parts that are derived from elsewhere.

On older, less sophisticated engines, I think mineral oils are fine.

I have used Comma xflow sourced here in NI without issue or concern.

VW specified 15-40 mineral.
I use 10-40 SS - easier spin over and starting.

Just spent a year rebuilding my JX (at plodding pace).

Most important is to change oil every 4-5k.

They are very very simple engines.

Good luck.

For the oil, a Synthetic is not a proof for quality as the additive package that the manufacturer uses is critical.

As Zoltan wrote, 15W40 conforming VW specification 505.00 is the right oil for this engine.
You may also use 5W40 conforming VW specification 505.01.
I didn't see any 10W40 conforming any VW diesel oil specification.

The oil filter housing - what do you mean.
The oil filter screws on an oil cooler. If your going this deep - dont bother with used.
There are alot of sellers on ebay offering used items at silly prices.
Get on the brickwerks site.

Thanks for clarifying zoltan

Problem with old Aluminuim parts is they become very brittle and just snap.

A few of those ebay. Found on MK 2 golfs and Jettas
