Broke down again

Post by TONYT25T25 »

Have posted previously but need new advice please. Took camper out today for its weekly run up the A3. After replacing vaccuum pipes in places I thought my problems had gone away. On return trip van started but shortly into drive started giving symptoms of fuel starvation and would not accelerate even in neutral. Tried to repair myself but to no avail. Called RAC out who was very helpful, ignition and spark.ok, fuel delivery to carb ok. He went as far as removing the carb from engine down to float chamber and cleaned jets. Also removed in line cone filter (the one that sits in the inlet to the carb)which was clean but remains out for now. After all this engine started first time and behaved itself on return Journey. Wondering if all ok now or will I go through this again. Pierburg 2e3. Just to add on return trip although running fine engine would cut out when coming to a stop, but started ok, which was the origin of this Quest.

The stalling could be an air leak at the inlet manifold maybe (gasket). Start it up and as it idles/tries to get someone to carefully spray some carb’ cleaner around the inlet manifold and see if the revs pick up.
Have the coil/ ignition amp ever been changed, ht leads etc tested?

Have had so many brake downs but bow down to those more knowledgeable.

All above and then.
Idle jet (unscrew and put a single strand of wire through it) screw back to same position I think
air somewhere
fuel filter (I have a spare if you like but they are relatively cheap)
fuel pump
battery (unlikely but never know)

good luck with it.

Thanks, I will check the air leak, ref coil and ht leads have been on van since I owned. The RAC man checked one spark plug and all ok with spark. Not sure where ignition amp is, so will research.

Thanks, he checked fuel pump and ok fuel spurting in and out at bothe ends. Fuel filter changed recently but have spare also, although a small one from GSF near to tank. Battery ok. Will research location of idle jet also.

It’s just in front of the coil. You can test the coil but not sure about the ig’ amp. I changed mine when I had rough running, misfires etc. After that the coil gave up, the symptoms of that failing were just random cutting out when hot. It’s easy to check the coil with a multimeter to rule it out.

Like to keep this post open until all problems and replies exhausted, cone filter back in as advised. Started engine today, started ok but would not keep running unless foot on accelerator. Working alone used a rod against accelerator and drivers seat so I could get to engine and increase revs by adjusting throttle plate screw. After engine warmer, took rod off pedal, but engine racing due to adjustment of throttle pedal adjustment, turned screw to reduce revs and ticking over ok. Wondering if I have to do this process each time I start engine, which is not a good method.

Thanks David, you possibly did, I changed vaccuum pipes that were perished and thought I had cured problem, as it drove ok, how is the choke pulldown unit checked, the last breakdown(this post) was more severe, so the puzzle continues

Started van this morning and all appears ok, idling and revving fine albeit stationary, no previous symptoms as posted earlier, will build up confidence to take it for a drive later.

Stick a longer pipe onto the choke pull down unit and suck on it. If it holds your tongue it’s ok.

Thanks David will give it a go, what puzzles me is the intermittent problems, if it happened all the time It woukd be easier to diagnose. This recent one as posted at the beginning of this post caught me out big style.
