Front passenger grease cap keeps coming off...

Post by crazyhorse »

Hi guys, as per title, has this happend to anyone? Cant figure it out. Have lost 3 now on the road, with speedo clip on also. So I make sure the cap is square on the hub. Use a socket and then tap the cap on as far as it goes, but within a few miles of driving it always comes off...

What wheels are you running on? Have the centres ever been bored out? Could the cable be somehow be pushing the cap off?

When it happened on mine I opened up the cap fractionally so that it gripped better, this was on a new one driver's side that the old one had lost its grip on. The problem is finding/making a tool with the required dimension to do this with. I turned up a piece of oak on the lathe for mine.

I found with my new speedo cap that it popped off all the time, but because it was a tight fit I had to beat it on with a rubber mallet so it stayed on, otherwise it wouldn't sit where it should on the wheel.

I think my cap has been rounded out by an unsecured Speedo cable. The circlip is missing. How do I get the darn things off?

When I had a stubborn one, I removed the wheel and tapped it off with a screwdriver and hammer.

Hello,

Removing the grease cap with out tears....

You will need some 8 mm by 20,25 and 30 mm long sacrificial bolts and a small hammer.

Wedge the appropriate size bolt between the lip of the cap and the bub..it will be at an angle. Now tap it straight, the cap will start to lift away, repeat on the other side, using the longer bolts as necessary.

To re-fit, use an old socket and extension as a drift, to avoid damaging the speedo cable.

Cordialement,

:ok

I only used this method the other day to get off a stubborn cap and it worked a treat. Get a claw hammer and put the claw part against the rim of the grease cap. The hammer head will then be fixed against the wheel so give the hammer handle a few taps upwards and the cap came away nicely.

I tried both methods but neither worked. That mofo was on there good and proper. Mind you my claw hammer had a chamfered claw so difficult to get purchase on the cap rim.

As this part was knackered anyway I used some delicate grinder action to thin and heat the metal and it came off easily.

Speedo now works the best it has for 20 years
