Thermostat

Good morning all, I have a T3 1.9 petrol. Just fit a new heater motor and resistor etc. Can I assume that if the vans heater gets hot that the thermostat is opening? I ask this as the cooling radiator doesn’t seem to get warm even after running the engine for twenty minutes or so. Not taken it for a long run as the vehicle is on a sorn at the moment. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

No, generally a car's heater is taken off the engine before the thermostat - otherwise you would never be able to demist your screen until well into your journey.

in the current temp the thermostat may not open from just idling, the thermostat regulates the water to the radiator the heater is within the engine cooling and doesnt need the thermostat to open, try leaving it running for an hour without the heater fan on or take it for a drive

The heater on t25 is direct off the engine, not via the thermostat as OBG said
You may need to run the engine for longer in these temps to get the rad hot

Thanks you guys, while fitting the new heater fan I hard wired the dash which cured the buzzer of doom but didn’t fix the temp gauge so when I can I’ll fit a new sender which hopefully will sort the gauge out. I’m just hoping my thermostat is working as from what I’ve read online changing that can be a nightmare, bolts snapping etc.

You would do well to add your vehicle details to the signature on here, helps with replies and saves time asking, i gather its late because you mention BoD , so plastic thermostat housing , which is lots less hassle than early metal ones by the water pump

Thanks for your input Steve, you’re correct my Auto Sleeper is a late model 1987 to be exact. Totally didn’t realise the thermostat housing was plastic.

I have another question regarding the actual thermostat housing which might sound a bit dumb!
The top cover with the bleed valve appears to be bolted to the housing using four bolts three of which can be undone from the top the forth however appears to require undoing from under the vehicle as there’s just the thread of the bolt showing. Is this correct? The vehicle is a 1987 carbed 1.9 petrol.

No. It should be four M6 bolts put in from the top.

Yet another question, (I’m still waiting for my Haynes manual).

Could someone advise me on the following:
The large hose which goes to the top of the thermostat housing, is that water coming from the radiator or going to the radiator?
