Earth straps on a splity

Hi folks, my mate on the IoM has a 1954 6volt split screen that can be reluctant to fire up.
He knows the electrics and fuel are in order but even with a new battery on he suspects it's not turning over fast enough.
Could the problem be that it only has one earth strap and that's from the battery to the body.

My question is should it have or would it benefit from having a second earth strap from the gearbox to the chassis?

It should have a strap from the gear box to chassis otherwise it will be a bugger to start yes. Being 6volt as well they will need good earths. Although is it stock or has it had any work done like IRS?

I am not 6V nor T1 expert, but having good positive and earth at the starter is always a good thing.
So an extra earth strap to the starter bolt would not hurt.

Thanks gents. Everything you've said and everything I've read points to earth problems. I don't know what IRS is but it's pretty much stock and it has had work done a few years ago by Irv's Resto's.

I've encouraged him to replace and add new quality straps.
I'll try and let you know how he gets on. He's only the second owner from new.

IRS is Independent Rear Suspension, it replaces the old setup and reduction boxes for the wheels with a more modern setup, sometimes different gearbox too.

I don't think anything is missing but knackered yes, after all it's 70 this year and it's kept in an open garage.

I think the owner is keen to swap them all out and add one to the chassis but he's 80 himself this year so it'll have to wait until the milder weather.
