Ignition not working when installed

Post by AlBundy »

Bit of an odd one for me. When everything is put together, turning the key doesn't start the engine, when I take it apart, it starts ok. I replaced the key switch thinking that would solve it, but that didn't work, so I think it has to be the ignition lock barrel, or the actual housing for the ignition lock barrel and key switch.

Do the ignition lock barrels wear out and need replacing, or is this something else entirely?

Pictures of how I have been able to start it. Image

If the actual ignition switch is working , then electrically all is good , have you reassembled the mechanical bits correctly , as long as the barrel turns the electrical switch to the correct position , and the plug is fitted correctly when its all back together i cant see why its not working

had the ignition switch been replaced previously or did you drill out the old one ?

The ignition was replaced recently (not by me), and it does just fall out of the socket, not exactly secure.

sounds like it has been done badly, and hence the ignition key barrel isn't in correct place or held securely, there should be a roll pin securing it in the housing - might be worth contacting Mick at VW NW for a replacement steering lock and ignition key housing with key and just swap them over, the steering lock must work correctly and be safe to drive otherwise you risk a serious accident

This is what I am working with.

My current assumption is that the key barrel and steering lock are old and worn and as a result, when I turn the key to move the ignition switch that starts the starter motor, it doesn't turn far enough to actually make the connection and start the engine. When I turn the key directly in the ignition switch, the engine starts.

I 'think' what I need to try is replacing the steering lock and key barrel so that they fix in place, and that will work.

Heritage parts have these bits in stock so unless anyone can correct me, will go ahead and try that.

Update, key barrell changed, and all works fine. Thank you all for you for your guidance.
