Gearbox linkage boot?

Post by Shinnster »

Hi all,
just had the van MOT'd and was advised to change out this worn boot / gaiter that is by the gearbox.
can anyone tell me the exact name of what it is as i've tried searching places for a replacement but can't seem to find one.

also, is it an easy enough job for a driveway mechanic laying under the van?

In reply to your comment about doing it yourself under the van.

I would suggest that you remove the rear half of the linkage from the van.

You will need to separate the selector cup from the shaft.
This is held in by a roll pin, which needs to be knocked out using a hammer and pin-punch.
Before you can do that
You would need to remove the shaft rear mount bolts, as the boots slot inside the metal retainer plates.

And separate the joint from the front shaft.

It is easier to do on a bench or somewhere - not crawling around on the floor.

Have a look online (youtube is your friend) for people repairing or refurbishing their linkages...
Or shifter shaft as they call it in Vanagon country.

It is clearly explained in those videos.

Maybe one day I might get it finished
