Hares figure heavily in German folklore, in fact that applies to a lot of European mythology but also features in ancient Chinese and Japanese beliefs.
I still say its a leaping hare with its ears trailing.

However they started in the Netherlands:
VEGE was founded by Mr. Wim Versteeg in 1936, originally a small garage business, the founder saw an opportunity to expand after the Second World War.

Vege registered in Tunisia for tax purposes? I maybe should have said European folk culture to satisfy the pedants, but historically the low countries share many roots and ideas going back millennia. Borders move around but myths and beliefs have no boundaries ;)

They say in the history section, they moved there to address the french market.
But I bet the cheaper labour costs and better tax options were the main purpose.
