Constant clicking Switch Relay

Post by whyte87 »

Hi all, Newbie owner/mechanic and first time poster so be gentle...

The switch relay to the leisure battery (beneath the passenger seat) usually clicks intermitently but as of the other day its now clicking constantly so more like a loud buzz/wirring rather than an occasional click.

I've checked the earth from the Relay to the bodywork and that seems fine.

What stops it is turning anything on.

So lights, indicators, window wipers all stop the swith buzzing. Also, turning the heater to setting 2 stops it. But 1 and 3 doesnt! Very confusing!

I'm hoping to get away in the van next weekend so even a temporary fix would be great. Tempted to just drive with the lights on but concious im ignoring what is obviously a bigger issue with the electrics.

Cheers all.

Worth getting a multimeter and checking voltages,it could be the alternator not giving out enough voltage so when something is turned on the relay clicks off, welcome aboard

Could be a duff relay or could just need the contacts cleaning, the ground might look OK but the cable could be loose on the terminal on either the relay or ground point side, always worth a check.
Post some pictures of it :ok

Relays and solenoids pull lots of power/amps and click due to lack of power or bad  connections causing low power.
The clicking is engaging and disengaging due to lack of power or dirty connection to hold them engaged.
Check all positive/negative connections for dirty connections/tightness including fuses and test the engine battery for cranking amps and internal resistance/cell equalization.
