I’ve been through 2 steering column plastic support rings in 2 months?!

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

I’ve been through 2 steering column plastic support rings in 2 months?!

Post by grace72 »

My original steering column plastic support ring that stops the wheel from moving up and down gave way a few months ago, so i fitted a new one which lasted a month and a half, before it went again! So fitted another new one and that only lasted a week! I’m pretty sure I fitted it correctly each time but there i can’t find any pictures of it actually fitted, only the exploded diagram of the column which at least show which way up it fits.
Does anyone have pics of it properly fitted? I have a theory that my heavy all metal Stoplock Pro steering lock I use is perhaps crushing this support ring? Any other ideas or pictures? Thanks

Yes that’s it. So you’ve fitted it inside the bearing before putting on the column. I just pushed it down with the lipped end down and put the lock/bearing on top. I had to press a fair bit to push it down. I forgot to mention I have that corsa power steering fitted (previous owner) but I believe it only the bottom of the steering column that different? Or am I wrong and that’s why it’s breaking?

in theory putting the nylon thingy either onto the column or into the bearing should work.
after you push the lock into place there is a black plastic securing collar that keeps everything in place
You can see it in this vid @2:30

Spacer is fitted. Not sure what metal ring you’re referring to?

probably means the contact plate for the horn
there is a specific way of setting up the steering column , the order in which things are done up, especially the tube mount bolts, the shear bolts, it is detailed in the Bentley manual, so I would suggest doing it by the book, if the dash has been moved then the fixed point has moved, and any modification of the column by fitting eps also means that original placements might not now be correct

When I’ve got a moment (it’s my only vehicle) I’ll post a picture of the column and the broken support ring to see if it’s different to the normal column?

I've just done mine after the wheel started rubbing whilst turning and moving up and down.  The above pic looks like the clear bush is upside down (may just be the angle), maybe that's why they keep disintegrating.  You also need to clamp the bottom of the column to get it sitting correctly.

Look at number 5 here, the ridge should be at the bottom. - https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/ ... olumn.html

Good video showing the clamping required -

I hope this helps...  making me wonder if the quality of these part is rubbish :(  hopefully I won't have to re-do mine again, as I sliced my finger open :D

Apologies for late reply as didn’t have a problem for another 4 months! Maybe the torque on the Allen bolt was too much, as it’s happened again 7ftlb is not much! Thanks for the info.
