Hi all fitting a mk4 golf gti engine at 50 degrees.also converting the manual to an auto
Always worth asking vw (tps) for the cost of parts. Cam belt. Tenshioner Water pump. Spark plugs inlet manifold gaskit.dip stick funnel were all cheaper than I could get them at euro car parts. Oddly tps wanted £30 for the thermostat and £5 for the oring sealwhich is outrageous. So I source one elsewhere.
The engine has a good service history but I am replacing all the serviceable parts now as its easy on the stand. The water pump is driven from the cam belt.on the 06a engines and I don't think its ever been changed.
Cam belt water pump tenshioner thermostat all replaced.
The rocker cover gaskt was show signs weaping this involved the removal of the inlet manifold as it snakes over the top of it to remove the rocker cover. I decreased the rocker cover and the baffle before re fitting.
All rebuilt and all service items now replaced apart from the sump whichi will fit soon. Interestingly the 15degree sump and the 50 degree sump are not a million miles apart. The 50 degree one is a work of art.
So its been a while and a learning curve. Manual to auto conversion . Complete suspension rebuild. New trailing arms. 2 auto boxes as the first was shageged . I am hoping to have the first test drive tomorrow after work.
.
Passed the mot today so that's another box ticked and the owner is coming to pick it up on the weekend. I have to say my head has been turned by the auto box. It makes for a very relaxing drive. The engine is nice and quiet just doing it's thing maintaining good coolent temps confirmed buy the obdw reader. I had to introduce a 27ohm resistor to the temp gauge circuit so that the dash gauge performed normally as I am using the APK temp sender for the ECU and the dash gauge.
The h&r springs and koni shocks have been replaced for bw avo -50mm kit as comfort was a priority for the owner and we felt the h&r would be just to sporty for his needs. I have to complement bw on this set up as if feels planted but very comfortable. The ground clearance at the lowest point is 150mm that's the diff on the gear box (bulges on an auto box) and the tail end of the sump.

I keep banging on about this, but an auto box in these vans absolutely transforms it. My 2.1 Auto caravelle was faster, smoother, quieter at speed and hugely more pleasant than all the manual (AAP 5 speed or whatever) vans I've had. It's no sports car and an auto box is just there ready to drop a cog when required on hills etc. Absolutely joyous, I really do regret selling that van.
Let's not mention the MPG though.
I am not overly concerned about the mpg. Recently we did a 1000km trip on our westy.agg Very low geared gear box. And it still returned late 20s which I find more than acceptable. The engine is the next generation from the agg so I would assume more efficient. If it actives mid to late 20s with the auto that has to be a very happy compromise. I am optimistic.
