Going to Cornwall...

Post by ozman »

Hi All,

I'm going to Cornwall next year. The 1.9 wasserboxer plus auto will get a good run... But concerned about reliability so going to break our journey into two hour chunks...

My friend has a 9a which we are considering swapping in for reliability and better cruising performance, but keeping the autobox...

Anyone got any guides/pointers to consider before committing to the swap?

Thanks :)

16v 2.0 ltr from golf GTi. Apparently I need to have a t25 diesel bell housing etc...

I'd also be up for any other option, but they need to be cost effective.

Looking for reliability with the auto-box and little outlay. I'm not sure these all go together.

Changing the engine will not make a very robust gearbox any more reliable.
Do not neglect the auto transmission. Changing the transmission and final drive oils will help without doubt. When did you last do this service? And clean out the screen filter. Put a new gasket in there too.
I have the fluids exchanged every three years irrespective of mileage. Both final drive and transmission.
In a garage it costs around 150-200 quid all in. At home around 50-75 quid...but without the cleaning up an oil spillage on your pristine driveway or screaming at the rubber seal to stay in place when refitting the sump plate.
It is a very good set up.

Thanks chap. This is really helpful.

I'm starting to like the idea of sticking where I am, but fitting an inline water pump along with my manually driven additional fan I've got.

I'll get the oils switched out after summer. It's that horrible red stuff isn't it?

I'm thinking the previous owners didn't take care of the bus as it's had three engines...

I'm filled with excitement and dread...

So... Practice run.

Siting between 55-65 in the M1 for 30mins after a drive 30mins to join and red light goes on and temp gauge shoots up...

Van already has an additional fan on which is permanently on for maximum collage.

I pull over and hit heaters on full and temp comes down quickly...

We then continue on same as before for another 30mins at 50-55 with no issues...

On the way back the next day... Same story only vans sitting at 50...

No water leaks and water at top of water reservoir. No oil leaks. No oil in water or vice versa.

Suspect possibly the following:
- Airlock in pipes hitting the temp sensor
- Top of reservoir cap not blowing off pressure at appropriate point

Any other suggest to check for?

Thinking about fitting an inline water pump to help circulate and wiring in with the fan upfront.
