Window fitting - DIY or not?

Post by Mrs8925 »

Morning all,

Van is currently in the garage having bodywork and a respray so obviously all glass has been removed. Garage won't be putting it back in for us but are happy to keep the van dry for us to re-fit before she comes home. Is it an easy enough DIY job between two people and some YouTube videos or am I better off paying a professional?

Hubby is very hands on and DIY orientated... I'm good at doing as I'm told

Any tips if it is a DIY job? Also, best place to buy seals from experience?

Thanking you.

OE windows are pretty easy to do with a couple of people, one roping them in and the other working round the outside shoving in the right place.
Follow the videos for the method - Use plenty of lube and soak the seals in a bucket of hot water. Side windows are stronger than you'd think, but windscreens are more fragile.
I'd start with the tailgate window first, they're easiest.

That's an Autosleeper in your picture I think, so will be non-factory windows. The principal of fitting is easy, in practice its a bit trickier, the only real advise I have with the side windows is you may need to give them a bit more force than you initially feel happy doing!

They make a tool for putting the middle bit of the seal back in, its not expensive and well worth it.

Don't know the best place to get seals, I got some from a general seller of sealing strips, but they weren't great as they struggled to sit flat on the corners of the windows.
