How do you mount bikes on your ladders?

Post by Fun. »

Hi All

I'm looking into rear mounted swing out spare wheel and also a ladder and trying to figure out how to mount a bike rack to it, I've seen Go Westy offering a bike rack system but when I phoned roofbox about it, they didn't recommend it as it was supposed to be a roof mounted system.

Has anyone done this?  Campervan Culture and Slaughterhouse Customs both offer solutions and say you can mount bikes but I don't know how it's being done.  I want to be able to take my daughter's BMX for days out at different skate parks and when we go away.

Any help appreciated.

Fun.

there are bike carriers that hang on a rear mounted spare wheel designed for 4x4s; sorry I don't have any details but Google should be able to help

I have a rack, designed I think for a T2 but will fit over 14” tires of any vehicle, that can carry a single bike hanging off a rear mounted spare wheel. It can be taken off when not in use.
I could dig it out for photos. I could even be persuaded to sell it!

Hi

Thanks for responding, does the bike overhang the side of the van if the wheel is off centre?

Cheers

Possibly. It depends on size of bike, wheel diameter, whether wheel taken off, and where spare tire is hung.

Look at max rax (it could be double x).

I have used them, brilliant kit, small to store when not on use.
Uprights come in different styles, a 4x4 one is suitable to be used with wheel carrier

They mount on tow bar mount (or on tow ball) - it's the one that mounts behind the tow ball that I prefer.

They have their negatives when compared to some other style, but they have several positives also

+1 for maxraxx
Ours has migrated from a Volvo 940, to a Disco 2 (with obligatory rear mounted spare wheel, to the van. Can carry as many (5) or as few as you want. Stable, centrally mounted, easily removed or swung down for rear access.

Leaves a handy lump of metal at shin height… but that’s life.
