VW T25 Loss of Power and Potential Miss Fire? Help Stuck in Italy!

Post by Blrsjer »

Hello all,

So we’ve taken my VW T25 1.9DG to Europe and she’s been going absolutely fine for a month now, however driving today we had a complete loss of power and jumpy almost staling driving and an engine sounding like it was miss firing I think? See video attached. We’ve got the AA to take us to a garage who say they can’t see us to next week, we’re in Italy at the moment. Any ideas what this could be and if I’ll be able to fix it myself? AA and garages are being very very unhelpful at the moment!https://youtube.com/shorts/F0Gux0gtO9o?feature=share

Bad fuel - Had you just filled up? Been through heavy rain?
Bad coil - Is it ok from cold then gets worse? Or loose/corroded connector on coil wires.
Intermittent spark - possibly dizzy cap or rotor arm. Do you have a rev limiting rotor arm? Also check the dizzy drive hasn't come out of mesh at the bottom by checking the rotor arm can't be turned by hand (other than against a slight spring tension). ((Just checked the video and see the dizzy drive is a couple of teeth out anyway, so that's a job that should be done, and check there's two shims under it whilst it's out))
Possibly HT leads (or those daft metal shrouds over the plugs).
A few first thoughts there for you to consider.

Have you changed fuel pipes and filter for new petrol.
If not could be bits of pipe blocking entry to carb
( tiny thin mesh at fuel entry into carb)?
Prepare for the worst but hope for the best

Hi Chaps, she’s been running on E5 for a few weeks in Italy so no fuel change. I’ve had a look at the distributor - taken off the cap and the rotor arm seems pretty corroded along with the contacts. I can push the arm fairly easily too. I’m assuming a new distributor is needed?

Thanks for the help!

And yes I’ve changed the fuel lines and filter recently!

Ignition timing slipped maybe,if  securing bolt loose rotor will allow dist body to drift towards retarded ignition, that causes lower power and misfire opening throttle.
Worth a check of static timing setting to get you going.
