Backfires & stopped

Post by captain Byrne »

Ok so 3 days before I’m supposed to go on holiday this happens. Lots of backfiring & spluttering then it stops. I wait a while & try it & it’s fine & runs perfectly. Then all of a sudden it stops. There’s juice getting to it & I currently can’t check if any sparks as I’m on my own waiting for a breakdown van. I’ve changed the dizzy & rotary arm so I think possibly coil? Thoughts anyone?

It can only be spark if the fuel is coming up. Is the coil hot? Get a multimeter on it.

Deffo worth checking coil as Double O has suggested - just to confirm is it the actual distributor you have replace or just the dizzy cap?  Reason i ask is that it could possibly be a failing hall sender within the dizzy itself.

Alternatively, if still no luck it maybe worth changing the ignition amplifier as these can just completely fail without warning.

I had something similar to this on another vehicle and found out that the distributor was loose in the housing, therefore affecting the timing, set it up correctly, ensured tightened up and all ok.

As all have said it could be something simple but assuming new cap, rotor, leads in good order and dizzy is secure, id be putting money on a failing hall unit in the dizzy.

I had several times where the van would miss and cut out, wouldn’t restart. Initial diag showed no spark and I assumed wrongly at the time the coil. I nipped home and picked up spare, returned and fitted…. All good. Ordered up a new unit and fitted only to find the same problem on another journey. This time I left it half an hour and it started fine.

Knowing all components good I decided to replace the hall unit and touch wood I’ve had no further problems.

Thanks everyone. Coil checked out fine. I eventually got it running & jiggled the wires from the distributor & it cut out. I have a broken wire somewhere in that loom. If I tie the loom up it's fine but when it sags down it cuts out. Will try & fix it tomorrow. All I need a day before my hols. Hey ho.

Where are you located? I can check the garage to see if I have a spare of this section?

Thank Ash, I'm in Glasgow but all ok I've found the problem. There was a dodgy splice connector on the earth on the loom. I cut it out & replaced with proper connectors & all is well again. Thanks everyone for your help - it was getting a tad sqeaky bum time!
