What comes first?

Post by Jr44 »

Hey all. I have just got myself a Vw t25 high top 1984. My question is. There is quite a bit of work to be done to restore it. Can anyone tell me please what order of things need to be done first. Ie, rust and welding then ...
thank you.

Hi is the van road Worthy or Doesn’t need a restoration to make it road worthy,
Maybe you could add some photos the more the better.
The thing with these vans is when you start a project it always leads onto more be it mechanical or body I mean rust and it’s always there hiding

Ok I see what you mean body panel https://www.alanhschofield.com/
If it runs do what you need to get it road worthy so you can use it then you can restore it as you go, if you do a full restoration it might take years cost a small fortune.
Also lots of info on here and many videos on you tube
Ps give it a jet wash it may need a lot of work but a dirty van not good for morale..

Thanks. A wash was the first thing I was going to do. I just thought there is a sequence of what to do first on projects. Will get it road worthy. Then go from there. Thank you.

Not sure. This is all stuff I’m going to be learning. I have a guy coming around to quote me on the welding etc. Then will start working on the mot failures and oil leak on engine.

Unless sentimental value you may be better off spending the 10k on a decent van. May not get you an absolute minter but probably find something pretty sorted.

If paying someone to do the welding you will find your budget could easily spiral. Same again if it’s a body shop paint job.

Think your best bet is to wait and see what the guy says who is coming to take a look before you make any firm plans.

Appreciate it. No sentiment spared on this. Just got it for sub 1k from a friend who isn’t going to have enough time to do it himself. (Father in law actually). I will see what the guy says about it all then go from there. Appreciate all the advice.

At that price it becomes possible, but still could be more trouble than it’s worth. It’s unlikely he will give you a fixed quote as once you start cutting out you almost always encounter a lot more than first expected.

Saying that it may always make a good donor van. Obviously you have a Diesel engine setup, even if engine is tired it will give you a lot of the parts used in the growing in popular 1.8/2.0 inline VW petrol found in mk3 golf.

Dont bother trying to restore it, its too far gone and has already been bodged up before, strip out the good parts and look for something solid.
