Alternator differences.

Post by chewbacca »

Hi all

I seem to have confused myself again. Can anyone help out please?

My old alternator looks as though it will fit my new 2.1 MV correctly. The new alternator is a 65 amp unit, I went for the late version since it came with a post for the main power connection.

Thing is, it doesn't fit the tensioning bracket & the pully doesn't line up.

Image

I don't know if you can tell from this photo (ignore the random MS paint line that looks like a crack lol), but there's an extra piece of metal on the casting where the slider lines up. My old alternator doesn't have this.

Secondly, the pulley is about an inch away from the units fan. My old alternator has the pulley almost touching the fan. This means that even if it the bracket did fit, the pulley wouldn't line up. I only have the water pump to check against as the crank pulley isn't fitted yet, but it's clearly different to the old one.

Anyone know what's going on please? I did a quick Google & all the alternators seem to have this same pulley in the pictures.

You should change the pulley over
can you not put the tensioner bar on the other side of the mount ?

Hi guys.

The bar is dead straight. If the lump of metal wasn't there, it'd be perfect alignment, as the old alternator was.

I presumed the pulley would swap over, but didn't want to get the spanners on it in case it needed returning.

I guess I could modify the bar, but just thought I must have missed something.

From your picture , looking at BW webshop it looks to me like you have a 90a diesel one rather than a 65a petrol , although maybe there web shop images are for illustration only ?

The box it came in had the right label on it. I'll double check that tonight. Looking at the brickwerks pictures, both their 65a alternators, early and late look like my new one, but as you said, could just be a random pic.

I guess I need to see if the pulley will swap over tonight. If it does, I can sort the bracket easily enough, modify or replace it.

In the mean time, I'll email brickwerks to check this is normal.

Just had a quick look on brickwerks again, they list the flat bracket for both 45 & 65 amp, then a different one for 90. The 90 is not only kinked, it's got the teeth on it for the "geared" bolt.
Now I'm really confused!  :rollin

All i did when i fitted a 90 a was kink the original rod in vice
works perfectly

the 65a you bought must have a 90a front housing fitted as it has longer thread boss

That's just what I was thinking. Swap the pulley over; provided that fits, reshape the bracket.

I'm wait for Brickwerks in case there's something wrong, then give it a go tonight.

Can’t get my head around your photo, but I’ll post this anyway for reference.

Update time. Thanks for all the help guys.

So, pulley off both old and new. I think I can space the old one correctly using a few from spacers from each. The old pulley has no key though, so I won't be messing around with that. I guess it didn't slip on the old one, don't see why it would on this one. Pulley has had a coat of paint, so I'll know more tomorrow. Just not sure how I'll tighten up the nut without causing damage to it.

As for the bracket, locked it in the vice, couple of love taps and job done. Just needs repainting now of course.

Brickwerks were great. Quite happy to have it returned and they are investigating it further. They offered to look at sending out the 90a bracket, but email them now and tell them not to worry.

Tomorrow should see some of these bits back on, I'm just hoping it all lines up!
