Testing LDA on a 16TD

Post by slippy8v »

Just a quick tip for testing your you LDA if your running 16 TD. I had put a new fan belt on my syncro last week and then started the van up, gave the engine a rev using the lever on the pump and noticed the LDA arm was not moving. So after some head scratching and the thought of spending £180 on a new one I thought I should try and test it, after bit of online searching, I hit on the idea of using a bike pump with the clamp on end, so clamped it on pumped up and LDA working as it should and holding pressure so looks like the hose feeding it may be goosed. Yes you can also move the arm out then put your finger over the small pipe on the LDA to see if it holds the pin out.

Thats awesome, will try this on mine as ive only a vac pump and been wondering how to modify it to push instead

I have sucked on the hose and it held pressure so not the diaphragm, thinking much lubrication next

I know you can move the lever forward and put your finger over the hose inlet on the LDA if is good the arm should not move until you lift your finger, but this way at least I know for sure its OK

Do not expect the LDA to do much or indeed any movement just by revving in neutral. Little or no boost is produced because the engine isn’t working hard at all (loaded up).

Good tip though and although a fair bit of work be aware that a diaphragm repair kit can be bought from a man in Germany for I forget what... £30 ?

So in the spirit of a fair exchange... check your fan/aux belts as broken or slipping belt on a JX, no water circulation

This looked OK till removed and turned inside out. Eeeek 😒 (the missing chunk damage must’ve been under the main crank pulley)

NB Check these belts regularly and closely. If they keep losing tension suspect poor quality belt, old perished/aged belt or trouble with the alternator pivot bolt or tensioning bar. Lastly when belt loose or off give the alt and wpump pulleys a spin and a wiggle to check bearings.
