Speedo Calibration woes.
Hi,
Hope this is the right forum for this query.( Apologies if not )
Just got my speedo back from Germany where I sent it to be calibrated.
It is an 805 MPH fitted to my 1990 T3 Westy 2WD
It came back much worse than previously and when I informed the guy , he is in denial and claims I sent him a 1000 speedo, I have only heard of a 1600 fitted to syncros.
I have my insurance photos of the speedo for mileage allowance etc.and MOT,s but he will not accept the mistake, so I still have a dodgy speedo and many euros out of pocket.
Is it possible that in Germany an 805 is known as a 1000 please and I am missing something.
Any advice welcome

Re: Speedo Calibration woes.
KMH Syncro speedo is 1000
KMH 2wd is 500
MPH Syncro is 1600
MPH 2wd is 805
simple and obvious really

Would comparing with a satnav be of any use as a comparison of speed in either MPH or KPH.

Re: Speedo Calibration woes.
Does anyone know what the 820 mph speedo was supposed to be in?
The Speedo in mine when I got it was an 820 and has a broken gear driving the odometer which seems to be quite common. I have sourced the gear in question but what to know the speedo is the correct version. I’m particularly interested in the position of the gear change dots. Are these a bit low for mine? Ex-diesel maybe or correct?

Re: Speedo Calibration woes.
820 is a US spec Vanagon speedo possibly, mentioned on Samba as alternative to 805, possibly they had different rules about speedo reading, the european spec basically reads something like 5-10% over, the Americans maybe had a different legal requirement, may even have been state specific hence they had both
Re: Speedo Calibration woes.
Thanks, that makes sense. Does anyone have any ideas on the gear change dots and different speeds for different engines/gearbox’s? I also have another speedo, 820 again, but the dots are much further up the rev range. I’m not so bothered about the slight over reading but would like to pick the speedo with the dots that are the nearest to what they should be to my engine/gearbox. Where would the gearbox code be stamped? I can check this later.

I realise I’ve hi-jacked this thread a bit. Maybe I should start a new one? Let me know if I should.

Re: Speedo Calibration woes.
Is it possible the speedo isn’t the problem for the incorrect reading , have you checked the cable, bearing cap etc ?
