Eberspacher D1LCC re-ignition problem.

Post by Rosie n' Jim »

Hi guys.

I bought a second-hand D1LCC compact some time back, and now have it fitted. It has an odd problem I can't figure out. When power is first connected, all works perfectly. But when started a second time, nothing happens. If I pull the fuse for a few seconds and replace it, the heater will start and run perfectly again for one cycle. I have used an old controller and a 701 with diagnostics. The fault remains, but no faults detected by the 701.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That should be in a museum! They date from the 70's.
What is the controller other than the 701? ( the 701 dates from 30 years after the heater so it isn't surprising that you cannot see any fault display)

Thanks for your prompt reply. Maybe I've read the label incorrectly. The top box has D1L C in it, next one says D1LC compact. The year tags at the bottom are 95,96 and 97. The 701 controller has a sticker with 29.2100.71.0005 on it. Does that help?

Perhaps the temp sensor is locking out, how long between switching off and on again ?

The 701 isn't meant for that heater that is why you will not get any error codes.

Again, what is the other controller?
This is the choice for the D1LCc:

I don't have the other controller to hand, but its about 3" square, thermostat dial bottom right and power switch with red and green light top right.
It makes no difference how long its off for, 1 minute or 1 day!

Could be simply the wrong control box causing the problem , usually it’s a simple mechanical timer

I've found the other controller on the P F Jones web site. They call it a modulator switch, code 292100300154. Its a pretty basic unit, no ic's.

It’s really an on off switch and a temperature selector , the thermostat is in the heater , presumably the controller you have also has a thermostat in it , if it works heats cools etc and you know the controller is wrong I would be inclined to change the controller

I have a second van at my girlfriend's, if time allows I'll swop them over and see if the fault follows the controller. Both have D1LC compacts of a similar vintage.

The thermostat is NOT in the heater in this case! The 292100300154 is the thermostat. Not the correct controller for the D1LCc though. As said above that is just on and off and on and off with the thermostat.

Without seeing the wiring and testing the voltage in operation it will be hard to diagnose. Is it original wiring with colours to suit? It is hard to wire a basic controller like that incorrectly but I have seen it.

I would use the correct modulator rotary knob to see if normal operation commences.

I was thinking of the earlier one from
The 70s as you mentioned, but as it’s the later one it’s a thermostatic controller
