Starter motor solenoid
Allo chaps is there anyway to get one of these open.
I'd like to fix it as I want to test the engine in the syncro I've picked up. The starter is not firing at all, have checked wiring and that all looked good and tested it to see if it was getting power, which it was. The solenoid doesn't do anything. Still need to try the motor on its own to see if that spins.

Re: Starter motor solenoid
looks like a crimped casing which means the only way in is to destroy it.

Re: Starter motor solenoid
Bah. Well not buying a new starter for it as I'll be selling the engine.. new solenoid looks to be around 20 quid, unless someone's got one knocking around

Try the wanted section. There's more chance of it being seen there.

Re: Starter motor solenoid
Remove the solenoid from the starter, put some grips on the throw out, live straight to the tail coming from the starter , you can manually engage the gear , £20 saved

Re: Starter motor solenoid
That sounds fun . Well i took the end cap off the motor and tried to turn it. Was stuck so took it apart and gave it a clean up as it was gummed up. After about an hour arguing with the brushes popping out when trying to install them back in onto the armature I got it back together and it turned by hand. Will test that tomorrow to see if it works. If so I could try that. Maxstu also suggested something but it seems he's having issues posting again.

Re: Starter motor solenoid
you need a press tool and a support that allows you to press the end cap and internals out, a little bit of gentle prying with suitable tool to start it and the body will open out under pressure with the correct tools, and then you replace the cap, reassemble it and you need a tool to reshape the end as you press it all back together, a good alternator rebuild shop will have the tools and skills to do it - I used to use LA Alternators in Warrington, but he retired, as many of his era have now unfortunately, and that's why so many refurb units are no good because the cap must always be replaced, and the correct long stud version fitted to suit our feed cable with the big copper slug terminal

Re: Starter motor solenoid
Just an update / closure on this, the starter motor doesn't turn at all with power on it so that puts a end to that endevour.
