Dipped lights not working and dash lights playing up

Post by Scaramanga1965 »

Hi Everyone,
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
I have just upgraded the dash lights with a Go Westy GVW-255-919-059-ANCLOCK pack. I didn’t know about the cheaper option. Never mind. Before I fitted the pack there where no dipped headlights only flash on the stick working and all the dash lights worked I just wanted a safer option as my finger fried on the old back circuit.
The indicator dash light now flashes in time with the second hand of the clock and when you start the van the clock stops working. Also no lights on dash and it’s not the dimmer switch dial.
I’ve replaced
The ignition switch
The Headlight switch
Checked the fuses
Replaced the wiper and indicator sticks
Checked the earth behind fuse box and connections
I’m desperate for dipped lights it’s too dark for just side lights. The only thing I haven’t done is change the hazard warning light switch?? Don’t know if it would make any difference?
Thanks
Sie

Have you an early or late van? the wiring is different on the dash clusters between early and lates. But if they were not working before hand and if you have replaced the headlight switch then I guess you got iffy wiring somewhere. I know you've said that you checked all your fuses and connections but check again, as well as clean your earths just because they look OK doesn't mean they are, I know from experience.

Also is your van MOT'd? not sure how you would get it MOT'd without working lights unless it's a recent failure?

Hi
Thanks for your reply.
I’ve got a 2L Aircooled 1983
It’s been running fine I use it every day
but the lights have probably not been used due to Summer.
The wiring is following instructions from GoWesty for the white plug behind the dash.
The earth wires look fine behind fuse box. Is there another one behind the dash somewhere it could be this one ?

I know this is a very daft question, but have you checked your bulbs in the headlights, or even the headlight connections on the outside of the van to make sure they are OK?

As for the grounds, to my knowledge they should be above left of the fuse box on a ground crown, I've got two on my van in that location. Early fuseboxes are different to lates as well so make sure it's wired right.. but honestly do the simple things first IE check your bulbs and connections on the headlights themselves first before delving into wires. Bulbs could have blown maybe due to bodges or just old bulbs.

I don't know about the go westy instructions, you could be plugging in a late setup replacement to an early plug, you can open the plug up and swap cables around, just make sure you get the right ones.

:ok

As for the ribbon cables

Hey Any suggestions are welcome.
I’ve got LED lights and they work fine as they flash when you pull back on the stick on the steering wheel.
This is what’s confusing me. It’s like there is a lack of power to the headlight switch and lights on dash etc
I can only see one earth nest near the fuse box and it looks ok. There was a loose one which I have put a new fastener on.

You don't have something that looks like that on the A pillar with all your grounds on above the fusebox or anywhere near there?

Do your lights not stay on full beam if you click your stalk? only if you pull on it?

You say you have LED's
Is that just LED bulbs with the stock housing or a complete replacement job?
If stock, they have seperate side light bulbs to your mains.

Yes that’s the earth point on mine.
The LED lights where an upgrade from CVC. For some reason I have to hold the stick back for them to stay on. They don’t click and hold on the on position.
I think the side lights are also connected with the main lights but I can’t remember. They may be on the main power. They are on the old harness.

Thanks for all the help guys 👍
I managed to get my lights working.
There was a wire come off and dropped down at the back of the headlight switch a yellow with black stripe. Also I needed to place the wires in the order to match the Go Westy wires which I hadn’t done.
Thanks again I can see the road now 😂
