Engine Oil

What is the general feeling about mixing oils of the same viscosity but from different brands.  When I last replaced the engine oil I used Carlube 15w-40 mineral.  I still have some of this left over which I have been using for either topping up or to use in the next oil change.  It appears now not to be so readily available and am looking at another brand to mix with it, Drivetec for one, are there any issues regarding this as long as they are the same grade and mineral based.  Also seen some comments on the use of synthetic oils, not to mix with mineral of course but are they just as good for these types of engines.

I wouldn't worry about mixing oils, better mixing oils than not having sufficient in.

Synthetics..... general view seems to be that they make the engine more leaky for any given viscosity. I have never understood why, synthetics are mostly about controlling chain length, but never looked into it either.

Yes I know not another oil thread but thanks, I  did a bit of wiki reading and research but always like to get an up to date opinion.  Ref using synthetic vaguely remember having a conversation with a supplier who said that in older engines like ours mineral oil is best as it does not attack the oil seals, whereby synthetic may?

I agree better have oil than worry too much about mixing them. I think regular changes are more than the exact type. Certainly in old canal boat engines we always used the mineral oil, but they were diesel.. for what it's worth I've settled in 10w40 semi synthetic from wherever, usually Wilco!

Carlube is readily available, but the last lot I bought they had changed to the triple R branding - same stuff. It's available (old brand) on Amazon, £30 for 5L. If you want cheaper, Millers Multifleet is only 20 quid. If you want better, the Penrite High Zinc 15W50 is perfect for the WBX, at £38.
