Van running to hot

Post by clone123 »

Hi
All I no this will have been discussed on here a few times but for the life of me I can't find any links so if one of you kind people can point me in the right direction it would be most appreciated.i am looking for a way to cool my van down I will be fitting a chicken switch for now but looking for a more permanent solution because I took it for a run yesterday about 2 o'clock when it was hot and the temp gauge when to 3/4 before the fan came on and it only stays on for about 10 seconds or so and then goes off and on keeping it at 3/4 doing the job it was designed to do but would like to try and get it running cooler if possible buy the way I did take it on the same run later on that day when it was cooler and the fan never came on once but the temp did go up to just under 3/4.

Where does it ( needle)usually sit , has its position changed. Do you have a two stage fan? My needle sits just before the red light and if it climbs past it, maybe 3/4 if the way along the first stage fan will come on and do it’s job. It doesn’t stay on long. In 9 years of ownership I reckon the second stage had only come on 2 or 3 times stuck in show traffic. If yours is coming on then going off surely it’s doing its job. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon but I wonder if you could try a different rad switch?
David.

Don't rule out the rad being shagged. Sometime it is the simple things. I just had to replace mine from a 1990 van, engine had been overheating for a while, but when I got the rad out it was obvious that a lot of the fine ally fins had just been turned to white power by road salt etc.

Cheers for the reply gents I think it's my driving and the hot weather just got back from a 30 mile round trip doing 55 to 60 mph and it never went past the 1/2 way mark until I accelerated to 65 to 70 then started going just pasted the 1/2 way mark easy off on the pedal back to 55 60 and temperature goes back to Halfway

Yep, these van's aren't really happy at 70. I cruise at 60 to 65 and that's with an AFN in one and a EJ25 in the other.

One last thing how do I know if my van has a stage 2 fan on it has three wires going to the thermo switch but only two connection's on the thermo switch so one wire not connected could it be that someone has replaced the switch with the wrong one when the fan comes on it sound like a plane

There are several different fan setups on the T3, but normally the fan is two-stage, so the switch should have 3 contacts.
