Oil Pressure Problem?
1.9 DG 1986 Lpg conversion
Hi
Couple of trips out now with the van, after a lengthy lay up.
Previous Owner renowned for being creative with wiring.. so the oil pressure light on the dash doesn’t seem to work. But there is a ‘additional’ light in the dash to the right hand side which is wired to the oil pressure switch that is located near the push rod tubes.
I seem to recall a low pressure switch near the oil filter and a high pressure switch near the push rod tubes..
This light has never appeared post ignition previously.
Last trip out started to flicker on tick over.
But would go out when engine revved.
On the way back today, the light came on once the engine was warm and stayed on.
Stopped, checked level and any signs of leaking. All ok.
No nasty engine noises.
So drove home, with care..
Changed oil and filter.
Same issue.
Do these switches fail often?
Does anyone know of a oil pressure gauge that I can at least put my mind at ease that the engine isn’t on its way out!
Engine runs well, doesn’t lose coolant or overheat, no smoke at all from the exhaust...
Should I just replace the switch anyway??
Cheers

Re: Oil Pressure Problem?
Oh you are going to have a interesting time putting that back to correctness methinks !
I suspect if the oil light has been bodged, then the BOD has too , the second Oil pressure sender is next to the water pump , and is the low pressure warning ( switches in at 2000rpm if the oil pressure is too low ) the one tween the push rod tubes is low oil / normal oil oil function
yes the switches do fail , but you have to assume that they haven’t and get your oil pressure checked before doing much on the way of driving imho.
once you know your oil pressure is ok / not ok , you can sort out the buggery that has happened previously and have a reliable warning system ...

Yep, that’s my thoughts...
Do you know of a decent gauge???

I guess also is there a previous post on how to best check oil pressure..
I will of course search, just wondered if anyone knew of a previous one..

Re: Oil Pressure Problem?
Removed push rod tube cover and the pressure switch is badly leaking...Literally leaking with the engine stone cold so when it’s running...!!
New switch comes tomorrow courtesy of Brickworks. Fingers crossed is the problem.
Am loaning a pressure tester if the new switch doesn’t rectify the fault, may even test it anyway...

Re: Oil Pressure Problem?
sounds like you found the issue , it’s fairly common .
you won’t loose more than a thimble full of oil changing it , as long as you don’t fanny about !
Fingers crossed and all that

Re: Oil Pressure Problem?
Changed pressure switch and no fault light.
Plan to fit a gauge..., added to the list....

Re: Oil Pressure Problem?
I fitted a pressure gauge along with my WBX rebuild but to be honest I an thinking about moving it from my normal eye line lest I get too mesmerised by it in hot, slow moving stop/start traffic and test out my Crumple zone .
Incidentally when racing my Ford Crossflow powered boat I fitted a 21 Watt bulb in what equates to the low pressure oil warning light in a vehicle. Wouldn't recommend in a vehicle it though.

Re: Oil Pressure Problem?
if the oil pressure is good, and the wiring is good then there is no need for a gauge , frankly they dont really tell you anything the original system dosent , and youll just get frightened by what its reporting .
(correct oil and filter) regular oil and filter changes and maintenance are the order of the day .

Re: Oil Pressure Problem?
Only problem with mine is that at some point over the last 30odd years the stock system was ‘modified’, so now have only one pressure switch, which am okay with tbh...
Oil and filter changed religiously by the PO every 6k, I’ve done the same so pretty much all I can do..
