Sorry to have taken so long to get back to this subject.

After some investigation and enquiring it appears that the bowl shaped fitting keeps the hose on the barbed spigot by preventing it from expanding under pressure from the fuel system to a point it can slide over the end of the barb and become detached (much as Oldiebut Goodie described). It's not crimped or bonded, just stops the end of the hose from enlarging too much.

I am a great believer in keeping my van as stock as possible and wherever possible keeping to the same parts and methodology as employed in the construction of the vehicle in the first place. However in this case I have gone down the hose clamp route for two reasons, firstly I had already destroyed two of these fitting by cutting through them. Secondly I am not fitting 'like for like' hose. The replacement hose is the biofuel proof type and even if it is of the exact same dimensions as the original hose it will be of a completely different compound and may not have the same behavioural characteristics as the original hose which could possibly render the bowl shaped fittings useless. It may well not but no point chancing it.

After firing the van up yesterday and checking the hose ends I took it for a good long test drive and all looks good.
