Which gearstick?

Post by Chromey »

Hello all

I snapped my LHD 4 speed 1983 Westfalia Vanagon's gear stick off at the weekend. Managed to get myself home with a tungsten screwdriver and lots of revs in 3rd gear, but am now faced with the prospect of replacing the stick. I looked at a few sites, and have found two 'matching' parts, which look different from each other. I won't be doing the work myself, but want to have the right part when my mechanic can fit me in, and I can't see the business end of the stick at the moment, as it is buried below (see pic).

Both of the links below claim to fit a LHD 4 speed 1983 T25, but look very different. Could anybody advise me which one I actually need?

Stick 2: https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/ ... arbox.html

Thanks very much in advance for any advice nudging me in the right direction.

Jon

After reading this I think I will be a bit more gentle with mine especially when selecting reverse, am I correct in thinking that the gearstick is hollow, if so would a length of threaded rod tightly screwed into both ends act as a temporary repair then welded as a permanent one.

About 550mm or so of 8mm mild steel rod will actually fit nicely inside the tube and if very lightly greased, can be tapped through the bent section without it straightening.
Hold both bits in a vise, butted together and correctly aligned (with the crack prepped for welding), start from the gearknob end and belt it home with a No2 copper mallet.
Weld each end (on a 5-speed, not possible on a 4), then do the middle. I advise using a bit of angle iron and 4 clamps to keep it straight and inline.

PS the tube bore is 9mm, but do this repair amd wont ever break again if the welds are good.

Sounds like SB has done this before, I think I may purchase a piece of rod to add to my list of spares or just in case of items.
