Early to late VW t25 exhaust mounting kit.

Post by Satch »

Hi guys, wondering if anyone has any alternative ideas for fitting the back box on my shiny new stainless exhaust. I've had the exhaust fitted but the mounting brackets for the silencer are somewhere on the other side of the Atlantic apparently and theres no telling when they'll arrive. Its basically been 3 months since I bought them on Just Kampers, part no J42396.
I've got a 1986 Water Cooled 1.9DG. Anyone know of another place I can get them?
Cheers Paul.

My Campervan came with the following exhaust system already fitted J41207 unsure if it was supplied by JK but the diagram shows mine, the silencer was not supported apart from a hanging strap on the tailpipe end, I fitted another strap on the piping the other side of the silencer as I was not happy with it just relying on the piping to hold it in place, cannot see from looking underneath how the silencer is supported anyway as there appears to be no place to attach a bracket, maybe somebody else reading your post will throw some light on it for both of us.

Yea that's the system I had fitted. I think the silencer will eventually be bolted onto the heat shield but without the brackets to go onto that we're pretty stuffed. I may get a couple made if this goes on too long. How hard can it be!

At 1986 you should originally have had a late exhaust system, and you would have had the straps to fit that new exhaust. Maybe it's had a replacement engine, and someone fitted an early, complete with exhaust?
Anyway, if you can get hold of a late engine hanger it has the casting holes to fit the proper late brackets, so you wouldn't need the JK conversion kit.

Have you checked if your hanger has the holes?

I see what you mean about the heat shield that's what made me think there was no room for a bracket, the previous owner left me a bag of exhaust bits and pieces which he said where not needed for this fit, there was a couple of quarter type moon shaped brackets maybe they were supposed to fit to the heat shield as there is no other place to fit them.

I've made the assumption it has the original engine, 85000 on the clock. Van is tidy all round, only had it a year, but I'll stick my head in there tomorrow and have a proper look around and maybe post a picture. I think the van was one of the last early versions, 01/86.

Nothing attaches to the heat shield (apart from the coolant tank). It's two brackets on the engine carrier, with straps over the silencer.

I haven't yet mentioned the poor quality of that JK exhaust. I've removed a couple due to problems, such as poorly manufactured silencer - wadding all moving to the tailpipe end and blocking flow, causing all joins to leak and lack of power. Horrible fit, leaking slip joints, cracking at/near welds, cheapo ugly mild steel u clamps. It's just a terribly cheap copy of the original JP system they used to sell, but poorly made in the Far East.
And it's the same price as the excellent UK made Speedshop system.

Obviously I've got the top and bottom straps that wrap around the silencer, just waiting on the brackets to fit them on to. Hard to see where they'll end up fitting though? They look like this...

I can supply you with the later aluminium engine mount which has the exhaust mounts on, 025 199 221 A
the earlier version is 070 199 221 A which doesn't have bosses for the exhaust which was just hung on the engine exhaust studs, with additional support struts from the block in some cases
but the exhaust shield on the later vans 251 863 846 D maybe different to the one you have, the later one is flatter on the part that goes down in front of the rear pulley

Cheers Aidan, I'm not going to give up on the idea that the brackets will arrive hopefully soon, but I'll keep your option in mind. Guess I'll have more of an informed opinion when I can offer them up to the job.
