Exhaust pipe Snapped
Hi all, I was driving the van this morning and noticed the engine being a bit louder than usual. Sounded like a really cool tractor.
Anyhow parked up had a look underneath....

Any advise on how best to play this. Its a stainless exhaust...
I think my issues with the lack of support to the silencer has come to bite me on the a*** and caused the snap.Cant think of any other reason why it might have happened??

Re: Exhaust pipe Snapped
Bit late now but shortly after buying my van it had a stainless steel exhaust fitted but I noticed that the silencer looked as if its reliance on support was from the other piping so added another hanger support near to it. for good measure, I think I will have another look tomorrow.

Re: Exhaust pipe Snapped
You only have two options really , either take it off and get it repaired by a welder who can weld SS , or buy another zorst , because no matter what other bodgery you try , it’s always going to be a problem ...

Re: Exhaust pipe Snapped
That's a VWSpeedshop exhaust. Should be guaranteed for life. Maybe ring Paul and ask?

Re: Exhaust pipe Snapped
Stainless is noted for that sort of cracking especially at weld points and with vibration. Something to do with the migration of the chromium within the weld area IIRC.
A magnet will usually stick to 304 stainless - very few are made with 316 due to the expense.

Re: Exhaust pipe Snapped
304 / 316 are austenitic Stainless Steels (capitalised cos it's a trademark ). Austenitic steels can be partially magnetic, do a magnet test and compare it with a fully magnetic type steel to feel the difference.
Try surface grinding high chrome steel on a mag chuck, it dont stick very well, I found that one out as an apprentice
