Air filter box operation and ducting

I have been trying to fathom out if this unit is operating properly.  Currently no 1 pointer goes into the base of the offside rear panel with no further attachments just ends in the void.

No2 pointer has a corrugated tube attached which just dangles down.

No3 pointer has a length of corrugated tube which points to the front of the vehicle and rests just below the air filter box and is open ended.

I gather the unit above no3 is the air regulator.

I have my ideas on how it works but cannot find any description anywhere.  Are there any parts missing, and how do I test if all is functioning correctly ie the air regulator for example. Tks in anticipation Tony.

The bit you are missing is the not needed heat exchanger part on the original exhaust , where the two cardboard tubes connect and draw warmer air from the exhaust up into the air intakes . Not needed in this climate , indeed , not fitted by Vw for uk vans after 84 ish only for cold climate use .

most of us just bin it all after the air box .

Thanks Steve, I found two pipes and clamps left over by the previous exhaust installer which I thought were placed over part of the exhaust pipes where these corrugated tubes would slot over I was going to reintroduce them, so am I correct in thinking that these corrugated tubes are redundant and should be ignored.  Also I was drawn to this area because I thought the engine was running to rich more of a smell than performance and my thinking was not enough air getting into the system, looking at this setup it does not appear to allow/draw a lot of air into the system does it rely on the area I marked as number one which is a bit narrow. How important is the air regulator with these bits now unnecessary does it affect its operation.

Like I said, generally we bin it off after the box

Thanks again, I can see by the diagram where the corrugated pipes would have been connected to.

Just as an after thought, the part marked no1 goes into the rear pillar/panel below the vent, this was covered by a piece of card where it enters the pillar, this had rotted over the years but I put it back in as best I could, I am now considering removing as it may aid heat from the engine to easier escape via the vent above as the opposite side is completely open, unsure if this would have a negative affect elsewhere in the system.

It’s water cooled, it doesn’t need to vent engine heat up there , mine is blocked both sides ( heating fuel tank one side, battery the other )
the card was to make all the air in there go into the air intake , and cut down on noise .
