Urgent - sliding door won't lock

I used to have an issue whereby you could only open the sliding door from the outside using the key. Gave everything a really good grease, and fixed that problem.

But now I can't get the door to lock at all, so you can just open it from the outside with the handle. This is a much worse problem.

Any advice? Is there a clever way to lock these, or does anyone have any suggestions as to which bit might be broken? Hesitant to jump in and take the latch apart as then I won't even be able to close the door!

Can you lock it from the inside using the button near the front of the door.

Sort of, if the inside bolt is down then the inside handle doesn't work, but the outside handle still turns without any resistance from the lock

So it can still be opened from the outside, sounds something internal of the handle or the key and may need taking apart to work out or fit another one.  Just checked mine the key moves the button/bolt up and down to open and close.  So when locked from the inside you should not be able to turn the handle from the outside, you may get away with taking it apart to see if something has come loose.

Interesting. So the key on the outside moves the lock bolt (assume you mean the up and down bolt next to the handle on the inside?) Mine definitely doesn't do that!

I think I need to take it to bits and try and figure out what's become detached between the key, outside handle and internal lock mechanism...

That's the one the key moves the up and down bolt, have a look on the wiki, maybe a guide there, somebody else will pop up shortly I am sure with some advice before you start taking things apart.

Hope so - it's currently parked on the side of our road with the door bodged shut with an Allen key. Hardly feels like my pride and joy is well secured...

Yeah, I've scoured YouTube but no luck - these doors seem to cause all sorts of trouble. Their problem was a broken cable to the rear latch - mine's okay.

I'm still puzzled by what the key does on the slider handle - I could understand if it just prevents the handle moving but to actually move the internal lock around, there must be a mechanical connection between the two....

I think you are going to have to take it apart and find out how it should work before repairing it, could be something simple as a loose bolt, missing washer or just worn parts.
