Gearbox Specialist

Post by PunkTraveller »

I'm looking for recommendations for a gearbox specialist, local to Newcastle/Wallsend area ideally. My van is currently jammed in 1st gear, in the car park, at work (Gateshead, Tyne & Wear). It was stuck in reverse but Lloyd Croft managed to realease it. However after releasing it and selecting 1st, it's now stuck in 1st lol.

4 or 5 sp?
If 5, oh dear, sounds like gearbox. However, if 4sp, probably the selector ball and cup on the rod end/gearbox interface. The ball pops out and jams on the edge of the cup. Temp fix, loosen the two bolts that mount the selector shaft carrier plate onto the box, and push it up a couple of mm higher. Do up bolts.
Then later when time allows, and preferably not in a car park, replace "onion" on gearbox, and/or selector cup. Also check onion is properly bolted to the end of the selector. If that's loose it could also cause your jamming.

Thanks for the reply ajsimmo. 4 Speed. Full gear linkage was done on the Monday as I was struggling with gear selection and it drove like a new van, all day Tuesday until I stopped to pick a mate up for work and struggled to select anything but 1st and 3rd. Limped in to work and it ended up 'proper' jammed in reverse. Lloyd Croft, who did my linkage came to my aid as I know how to drive it and that's about it. He said the linkage was fine but after some Googling and a word with another that knows a bit, decided that the gearbox probably wanted checking out.
