Re: Heads Off Due To Pressurised Coolant
And to what standard do l clean this mating ring area to the sleeves? When l pulled the sleeves out there was loads of black mastic around the base and covering the sealing ring. Is it needed?

No mastic unless you trained at that place in Essex
Cleanliness is next to godliness in engine building. keep cleaning, no scratching though.

But l need a bit of guidance here. Should l clean the ring surface in casing with fine wet and dry with a bit of oil to get it shiny again? Or just a quick wipe with a clean oily rag? Besides, how clean is clean? Have you seen our house, with four dogs roaming the four quarters. Maxine and l think its clean. On the other hand the kids throw up when they (rarely) visit. Nah, its really not that bad.

Re: Heads Off Due To Pressurised Coolant
I'm on the page of cleaning only, no abrasives which could destroy a seal.
Diesel and petrol are good solvents for removal of stuff, brake cleaner to remove final residues.

Do you know what, Rick? I think you are right. Same type of material and curve is correct.

Wire wool, but don't lose any into the engine. Always a challenge if you aren't going to split the case.

Thanks very much. Engine is on (best buy ever) a rotating engine stand. I can clean with engine at correct angle so debris falls away from internals.

Or scotchbrite pads. Less aggressive than wire wool, but with thinners or brake cleaner gets most bits nice and clean.

Re: Heads Off Due To Pressurised Coolant
Anything standing out to you guys? Ive cleaned a little with wire wool and brake fluid. Nothing heavy. But not end result.
There's a small bit of black rubbery mastic style material over one ring. Cant recall seeing it when l lifted heads though. Perhaps l cleaned away the crucial evidence. Can it leak from other side of ring? Will heat up and lever of with non metallic utensil.
BTW. Why does one head have 3 stamped and other 4? I thought heads were l identical?

Re: Heads Off Due To Pressurised Coolant
I think the numbers you are seeing are casting numbers, the heads are the same left and right.
Diesel does a better job of softening carbon deposits than brake cleaner and I have always managed to get the sealing ring off with a small screwdriver.

Re: Heads Off Due To Pressurised Coolant
Just thought of something l recall reading some while back. Mounting points for PAS using DG heads? No holes?

Anyone care to comment?
Also lm cleaning where lower sleeve seal mates with main cases. Ive found a small crack. Is this an issue? About 4mm long. Perhaps that why black silicone (l mean same stuff used on heads) was laid around base of all sleeves.
Your comments please...
