Points and Condenser help
Hi. New member to the forum and looking for some guidance.
I have an '81 T25 Aircooled. Looks and sounds like I need to replace the points and condensor but every mechanic I ask about this seems a bit confused.
When I search online I see no trace of point or condensor recommends for T25s and wondering if my vehicle is just a bit odd.
Any pointers or links on what I need to order?
Thanks!
Felix

Re: Points and Condenser help
I think you'll find it should be electronic ignition....

Have you got a picture of your distributor, and one with the distributor cap off

Re: Points and Condenser help
They all had electronic ignition unless it was destined for some third world countries.

Re: Points and Condenser help
The points in the distributor aren’t the right ones , look for late bay 2ltre points etc or 009 ones
Condenser wants changing by the looks of it
Re: Points and Condenser help
Thanks! I did order the 009 set just as it seemed the most likely. I'm now intrigued by the engine of this vw... the only history i know is that it used to a be a dutch police van be fore it was converted. Was it really only african market that had no electric ignition? It also has no choke in the carbs which seems strange to me but I dont know these mitors too well.
Re: Points and Condenser help
Hi new to the site also. I have a 1984 1.9 petrol T25 campervan I bought late last year and I am confused as it has a basic mechanical distributer with points but no vacuum advance retard. I suspect that someone bodged this in its history as I also found it had a T2 fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump with correct model but the engine runs fine with the current points distributer. I cannot find any data on it though so dont know what to set the gap to. Any help?
Re: Points and Condenser help
I was under the impression it was 0.4mm but Ill wait to see what others suggest also.

Re: Points and Condenser help
Well as the T25 wasn't fitted with points there's no specification as such.
If its running well then leave the gap as it is.

Bosch distributors are 0.4mm (16thou) points gap, better set to 50 deg dwell.

Hello,
Oooh a 2l CU running a p+c dizzy.....
Albeit an 009....
Some videos:
Tickling the points part 1

Part 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYm5aVSgHKw
Done with a T2 dizzy bought off e bay for €12..
Also retro fit a P+C dizzy on an Aircooled:

or a Powerspark:

The 009 dizzy, usually fitted because it is the cheapest, is not the best for this engine, I prefer to set up on SVDA..
however it is a useful spare to carry...
Hope this helps..

Cordialement,
