1.6jx to 1y conversion
Hello good folks of club 80-90. I own a 1986 t3 matkaaja. Its got a 1.6jx engine and its about 2.5 tons in weight. I have at my disposal a 1y engine from a vw caddy. What i want to know is,
What exactly fits the 1y engine from my jx eg manifolds, sump, oil pick up, injector pump engine mounts etc.
If the exhaust manifold and turbo fit, does it need an intercooler
Is there an intercooler off any other vehicle that could be modified to use in a t3
Will it need an oil cooler.
Will an oil cooler from another vehicle work?
Will a flipped passat gearbox fit this engine and if not will my standard 5speed be up to the job.
Im looking for a nice simple engine transplant with a little more power than what i have, and from looking at both engines and reading some of these forums it seems this is the easiest way to do it from what i can see.
Any information would be gratefully recieved and most definatly put to good use.
Thanks folks!!

Re: 1.6jx to 1y conversion
I have done this convertion about 18 months ago I used my 5 speed gearbox off the jx I used the clutch/injectors/diesel pump/the 4 injector pipes/inlet and exhaust manifiolds/turbo/dipstick/oil pump and oil pickup pipe/sump/engine mountings and I think some of the plastic connectors for the water pipes but my 1y engine had 1.9td on the block and had the jets to squirt the oil underneath the pistons. And I used the alternator off the 1y engine but you can use the one of the jx you should have all the bits there to do the convertion but if it hasn't got 1.9td or the jets under the pistons I was told not to put the turbo on.

That’s brilliant!! And everything fitted straight on?? What about keeping it cool? Have you got an oil cooler on it or are you just running it as is??

Re: 1.6jx to 1y conversion
No oil cooler needed I think the jets that fires the oil on to the underneath the pistons keeps it cool enough and I forgot the flywheel and you have to buy a spigot bearing it goes in the centre of the flywheel where the spline from the gearbox goes in sorry if I have forgot anything but you will have all the parts to do the conversion and if you get stuck you can always asks and something on here will help as they did with me

That’s brilliant. Thanks for the info. Was there any noticeable difference in power?

Thats one question I cant answer as when I got the van the head had gone so instead of repairing it I just did the conversion to the 1.9

Ah right! Well you’ve given me plenty positive information anyway so thanks for that. When I get mine done I’ll let you know of any differences!!

Re: 1.6jx to 1y conversion
So further to this thread, I have found myself a GTD injector pump with injectors and fuel pipes. Im told that this is a better injector pump than the one on the JX engine. As I plan on using a 1Y engine Will this pump be suitable on the 1Y engine?

Re: 1.6jx to 1y conversion
My understanding is that they're pretty interchangeable, and that it's more a case of what fits. The JX pump was given an oddball cylindrical LDA so that it fitted under the engine bay cover on the T25, whereas the GTD pump didn't have such constraints when originally installed and so it has a 'tower' LDA in the top of the pump.

Hi
I went from 1.6 CS to a 1.9 AEF (Skoda felecia n/a) and the difference was very pleasing ... so the turbo will pep it up even more
