I know most of the second hand engines you see for sale have the filler tube broken.
that would be because people know no different and split the pipe and just remove the plastic bit ( which will not go back on ) instead of taking it off at the sump
Mocki wrote:no need to take the oil filler tube off to remove the engine, infact no need to remove anything other than the under side tinwear that is bolted onto the chassis rails ....you will need to undo that main vac pipe tho !!!
just remember to disconnect the gear linkage off the gearbox before you lower the engine , saved bending it and making adjustments necessary when the engine swap is over and you cant get all the gears!!!
Just put this in the wiki. Job done

Thanks for all the advice - I’ll be removing the oil filler pipe and the gear linkage.....only because the oil filler on the DG is new and so will be going straight on the DJ.
Gear linkage was overhauled last winter so it should be straight forward to disconnect it - do you just remove the bit at the selector cup or go forward to the UJ and take the rear rod out? Not intending to drop the Gearbox out so I guess it’s just to stop it being bent as you move the engine off the Gearbox?
I don't really get why people seem offended by removing stuff off the engine before dropping it, most people have to swap it all over to another engine so it's coming off anyway.
It's like there is only one 'official' way of doing it

Not sure if anyone is offended by you removing the filler tube. I'm not.
It's just that I usually leave it on, and will often leave the oil in until I get around to stripping it down. (I'll often have a better one that's been cleaned ready for the new engine anyway.)
If an engine's just coming out for repair, such as water jacket seals, why take it off just to put it back on again?
But anyway...there we are.

Sorry if that's a pop at my joking 'Official' term … I have an 'Official' IT Operatif (#1 daughter), Official Awning Operatif (#2 daughter) Official Christmas Dooo etc etc … it's intended as a joke for those who know us and I would surprised and disappointed if that had upset anyone, let alone you mate.
There is no 'Official' way to do jobs, I was shown to take engines out that way by Tickledonion many years ago and have been doing it (many, many times) that way ever since.

So, dropped the DG out today as I had a bonus early finish from work
(Removed Gear Linkage and Filler tube...just to be safe)
Tomorrow is cleaning up the Engine Bay ready for a couple of coats of Rustoleum.
Got a little sidetracked as it was up on stands and started stripping the rear wheel arches with half a mind to remove the trailing arms and get them powder coated..... must stay focused on the job in hand....
Spent the last couple of days trying to get the engine install back on track after life and replacing the rear suspension got in the way.
The engine bay has been resprayed ready for the new engine. The DJ is cleaned and I’m ready to start bolting bits on in preparation for the install.
My first question is - do people use gasket sealant when bolting on the various coolant flanges/oil filler pipe/oil pump etc.
I have new gaskets and bolts for pretty much everything, just don’t want things to leak once they are on.
In the past I have used the quality gaskets from elring or VR sets dry and with a smear of grease and most of the time they are fine but I have had the odd leak and so now I use a smear of Curit-T which is a non setting sealant.
