We're on the 16" OEM Syncro steel wheels running 215/70 R16 BFG ATs. No problems with fit or rubbing and they run as smooth as anything else. The only drawback with such a bulletproof setup is that wheel + tyre = plenty of kilograms to handle.

E D I T: We've got 5.43 diffs and calculated that we get a similar ratio of engine revs to road speed with these tyres as we were getting when the van was 2WD.

Westy? Petrol? 4.86 diffs?
Dont increase the gearing more than 5%, it will become a slug, from my experience.
In other words, no bigger than a 215/75/15 or equivalent (actually more like 7%)
Put numbers into this (others available)

205/70/16, if you can find them...

...and absolute minimum 95 load rating for 1300kg max rear axle weight. You will probably end up with 98's which gives some safety margin.

Goodyear Wrangler. Classic Range Rover size, I had a set and they did 40k.

I went with Mefro 16” Steel’s with 205/60 16” Michelin’s. Closet match to original diameter of 185/82 14” it came with.

https://tiresize.com/converter/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

205 width is max width for the 6” wide wheel

The minimum width rim for specific tyres is down to the tyre manufacturer. If I recall correctly, the OEM 16" Syncro rims are only 5.5" wide but BFG quote that as the minimum width rim to fit their ATs in 215/70.

I am currently running 6" x 14" oe steel rims with a very low mileage set of hard to find BFG AT's. albeit they are a little challenged date wise. I have a set of 5

You'd be better fitting 15" Mefros with 215/75 tyres, your JX will struggle on 16" rims imo. Gary.

My 1.6 is more like 1.7, nevertheless the acceleration and torque at high revs is quite impressive. Top speed on the other hand is limited! (I rarely go above 50!) I was not planning to increase the tyre size dramatically, just want more than zero options regarding tyre choice. Plus I think the mefro wheels look cheap.

215/70 R16 is almost exactly the same diameter as 215/75 R15 - there's no difference in gearing. The rims don't have any bearing and only really determine available tyre choice - some tyres are only available for one rim size but not the other.
